Why is it that people who have been practicing pilates for a while notice they are actually TALLER than they were before? It’s all about their new and improved posture. Simply standing up taller rather than slouching will add more inches when measuring your height.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being short. I am only 5 feet 2 and a half inches and I’m totally ok with it. But, I would rather be a short person with great posture than a short, slouchy person.
Pilates is a great exercise system to help with increasing the length of your body because when you practice regularly, you improve your breathing thereby delivering the much needed nutrients to all of your tissues making them healthier. You also perform movements that support the elongation of your body rather than compression. You work your muscles in lengthened positions creating strength and flexibility. You increase the ability of your stability muscles to work more efficiently so your larger muscle groups can focus on the jobs they need to do.
Visually, when your posture is a slouchy one, you look like you are being drawn down to the ground. This has a very compressive look.

Compare this to someone who stands tall and has a posture that looks to be rising up away from the ground. This posture makes you appear taller, slimmer and more confident.

Great posture helps you look better, feel better and allows your body to work more efficiently, which often means less aches and pains!
On a personal note, I am happy to report that the last time I had my height measured, I now measure a whopping 5 feet 3 inches. I gained one half inch! My challenge goes to all those out there who have postural challenges. Have a postural assessment, receive some great direction, practice daily and see the results!
